Newcastle United are set to be paid compensation from FIFA, as a result of Yoane Wissa’s injury while on international duty.

As revealed by The Mail’s Craig Hope, the club applied for reparations from a scheme called CPP (Club Protection Programme) that supports domestic football clubs when players are injured playing for their country, and subsequently ruled out for more than 28 days.

Wissa injured his knee on September 9th, playing for DR Congo in a 3-2 defeat to Senegal. The earliest he is expected to return is October 18th, when Newcastle travel to Brighton, however, he may still need longer to fully recover.

It is worth noting that the Congolese forward had not played any first team football since last season, as he refused to play for Brentford in order to force his move to Newcastle.

As a result, the 29-year-old was not fully match fit when thrown into two international games for his country, starting against South Sudan and once again four days later in a World Cup qualifier against Senegal, where he went on to get injured.

The CPP payments are set to cover Wissa’s wages from October 7th, until he makes his full recovery and plays a game in black and white.

It’s not a huge amount, but with the striker yet to play or train since a £55m switch from Brentford on deadline day, a small saving is better than nothing for the club.
