There is never any love lost between Newcastle United and Arsenal, and that continued to be the case on Sunday.

It was another game filled with controversy, as Newcastle United lost 2-1 to Arsenal. It was a painful one for Eddie Howe, whose side conceded a 96th minute winner.

There were plenty of incidents before that decisive goal. Newcastle felt they should have had a penalty for a handball by Gabriel, while Nick Woltemade was struck in the face by the same player.

Arsenal were also denied a penalty. The referee did initially point to the spot when Nick Pope wiped out Viktor Gyokeres in the box. However, VAR showed that Pope had actually got a touch on the ball first and the decision was overturned.

Arsenal complained about the decision, with Mikel Arteta left furious. However, Newcastle United assistant head coach Jason Tindall viewed things differently.

Jason Tindall claimed Viktor Gyokeres dived

That is according to journalist George Caulkin and Chris Waugh, who have provided details of what happened on the touchline following the penalty call on the latest episode of Pod On The Tyne.

“He [Arteta] was going pretty mad on the touchline, head in his hands, you know, kind of laughing, sarcastically applauding the referee,” Caulkin said.

“In the meantime, Jason Tindall was saying that Gyokeres had clearly dived twice. ‘He’s dived’, he was saying that, so it was, you know, the usual…”

Waugh interjected: “He was gesturing the dives.”

Caulkin responded: “Yes, he was gesturing the dives. It was the usual, usual argy-bargy between the two benches.”

Despite Tindall’s protestations, it certainly was not a dive from Gyokeres. The £64million striker was clearly wiped out by Pope, but his touch on the ball managed to lead to the decision being overturned.

Jason Tindall has history with Mikel Arteta

When Newcastle United face Arsenal, there is often just as much drama on the touchline as there is on the pitch.

It usually involves Jason Tindall and Mikel Arteta, with Eddie Howe always doing his best to remain calm and professional.

Tindall and Arteta clashed at St James’ Park a year ago, as Newcastle beat Arsenal 1-0. Tindall also annoyed Arteta in January 2023, with the Arsenal boss fuming over the Toon assistant’s presence in the technical area.

Fast forward to September 2025 and Arteta does not even stand in his own technical area. Instead, he is practically on the pitch and consistently breaks the rules.

Kieran Trippier did remark on that during Sunday’s game, refusing to take a throw-in before the Gunners boss stood back.
