Chelsea host Benfica in the Champions League on Tuesday, giving the visitors an opportunity to get some payback.

Benfica were beaten 4-1 by Chelsea at the Club World Cup, a tournament that the Blues, of course, went on to win.

Former Chelsea midfielder Craig Burley recently criticised the Club World Cup, describing it as “absolute nonsense”.

However, it was a competition that clearly meant a lot to both Benfica and Chelsea.

Chelsea left Tiago Gouveia and rest of Benfica dressing room heartbroken

One Benfica player who will not feature in the Portuguese club’s Champions League clash against Chelsea is Tiago Gouveia.

Gouveia is currently on loan at Nice, but he did play for Benfica at the Club World Cup, including in the defeat to Chelsea.

According to the defender, it was a loss that left the Benfica dressing room feeling “sad” and “heartbroken”.

Speaking to Benfica’s official club website after the game, Gouveia said: “It was a difficult day, a tough night for us. We were very confident that we could come away with a win. The team is sad, it’s heartbroken. We were, as I said, very confident, we believed that we could go on.”

They put up a real fight against Chelsea, drawing level with the Premier League outfit in the 95th minute through an Angel Di Maria penalty.

However, a red card saw them absolutely collapse as Enzo Maresca‘s men went on to score three more goals and win the game 4-1.

Bruno Lage was in charge at the time, but it is ex-Blues boss Jose Mourinho who will take Benfica to Stamford Bridge on Tuesday.

Benfica midfielder Fredrik Aursnes was impressed with Chelsea

Fredrik Aursnes also played against Chelsea at the Club World Cup and thought his opponents were very good.

He told Benfica’s website: “I think Chelsea played a very good game and created a lot of chances. We also had a few chances, but in the end we were eliminated.”

Aursnes could line up against Chelsea again when the Eagles travel to Stamford Bridge. It is a game that both teams need to win after what happened on matchday one.

Chelsea were beaten 3-1 by Bayern Munich, while Benfica fell to a shock 3-2 defeat against Azerbaijani side Qarabag.

The pressure will be on Chelsea, though. Everyone will be expecting a reaction after their disappointing 3-1 loss to Brighton & Hove Albion over the weekend.
