Mainoo could love the potential appointment of Gareth Southgate as the new manager of Manchester United.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe has met with the former England manager and is believed to be a big fan of his, with Amorim’s future at Old Trafford now in doubt.

Southgate called Mainoo ‘amazing’ back in May 2024 when he was announcing his squad selection for the European Championships.

During his time working under Southgate, the 20-year-old made ten appearances, six of which came during England’s Euro 2024 campaign.

It’s clear that Southgate is a strong admirer of Mainoo, having started him in the final against Spain, and he would surely benefit from his arrival at Old Trafford.

Mainoo was linked with a move away from United over the summer, but the youngster ended up staying, and this could be a huge relief.

What Gareth Southgate said about Kobbie Mainoo’s best position in 2024

Speaking back in February 2024, Southgate claimed that Mainoo’s best position is in a more advanced midfield role.

The former Three Lions boss did not think that Mainoo would be a number six as he believes that he is ‘quite a progressive player’.

Southgate made it clear that he had a fair amount of admiration for the youngster, and now he could be about to manage him again at Old Trafford.

Southgate told The Guardian: “He’s doing brilliantly. I’m not certain he’s necessarily going to be a defensive midfielder, as such.

“He’s quite a progressive player, but he’s had a fabulous start to his career, and it will be good to monitor him as we go forward.”
