Manchester United sources insist the club are fully behind Ruben Amorim and backing him to turn things around at Old Trafford, TBR Football understands.
However, we understand the club’s hierarchy are increasingly aware of options that could be available to them should they make a change.
Director of football Jason Wilcox has backed Amorim from the outset, and the club’s recruitment policy has been designed around the current 3-4-3 formation that Amorim has employed since his arrival at the club.
United were very happy with their summer transfer business, which saw the likes of Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, and Benjamin Sesko arrive, yet the club’s fortunes are not looking much better.
The weekend’s loss to Brentford has piled pressure on Amorim, and some within the club are concerned about their head coach.
TBR Football revealed that co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe contacted former England boss Sir Gareth Southgate, and we can add that other options have internally been identified as “possibilities”.

Man United sources have informed TBR Football chief correspondent Graeme Bailey of the four-man shortlist drafted in the event Amorim is dismissed at Old Trafford.
Bailey states: “United are backing Amorim as they have since the day he arrived, let’s not suggest in any way they are not, but that said, there is concern within the club’s hierarchy about the performances, how can’t there be?
“Whilst the club are behind him and want him to succeed in the long-term, this is a result business. He has won just nine league games from 33 – that is not good.
“Off the back of that, United are doing their due diligence on options. Whilst not an active search at this point – Gareth Southgate’s name is on their list, along with the likes of Oliver Glasner, Andoni Iraola, and they have always appreciated the work of Kieran McKenna.”
While an insurance plan is in place, TBR Football understands Ratcliffe is backing Amorim to succeed, but has stressed that he wants to see immediate improvement from the manager.
Amorim has faced sack calls since the second week of the 2025/26 campaign following the 1-1 draw against Fulham and has won only half of his league matches since his trip to Craven Cottage.
The humiliating early Carabao Cup exit at the hands of League Two outfit Grimsby Town was a particular low point for the United boss. After easing some of the pressure following United’s 2-1 victory against Chelsea, Amorim appears to be back at square one.
Although Southgate achieved great success with England, Glasner and Iraola are defying expectations in the Premier League this season, with the former beating champions Liverpool to maintain Palace’s unbeaten record.

As previously revealed by TBR Football, Bournemouth will offer Andoni Iraola a new long-term contract amid the growing interest at Old Trafford.
The Cherries boss has performed a phenomenal job thus far despite losing £207 million worth of talent in the summer, including the entirety of last season’s main backline, excluding Adam Smith.
While Bournemouth are confident of tying down Iraola, the Spaniard has been standoffish when commenting on his future at the Vitality Stadium.
Although Amorim has failed to win successive Premier League games throughout his tenure and has earned 34 points from 33 matches in charge, his future is secure for the time being.
