Newcastle are sweating over an ankle injury Guimaraes picked up in the 3-0 win over PSV in the Champions League
There was a collective hush around St James’ Park on Wednesday night when Newcastle captain Bruno Guimaraes went down to the ground and signalled for some treatment.
The Brazilian international fell awkwardly while challenging for a header with PSV goalkeeper Matej Kovar and although he managed to get up and hobble back to the halfway line, a break in play saw him fall to the ground in pain.
While there were many positives to take from Newcastle’s 3-0 win over the Dutch champions, not least the fact they have punched their ticket into the Champions Leaue knockout rounds, losing their talisman could be a huge blow.
Guimaraes has been the club’s inspiration in a season mired with inconsistency and his eight-goal return from midfield is already his highest goalscoring campaign in English football since joining the club from Lyon four years ago.
