After an incredibly busy summer transfer window, it will not be long before Newcastle United turn their attention towards January.

After making six summer signings and selling Alexander Isak to Liverpool for a British record transfer fee, the Newcastle United squad looks massively different to how it did at the start of the summer.

With January not too far away, Eddie Howe will soon have another opportunity to make changes to his squad. This time he will have a sporting director too, with Newcastle recently appointing Ross Wilson as Paul Mitchell’s replacement.

It will be Ross Wilson’s first opportunity to flex his recruitment muscles at St James’ Park, but that does not necessarily mean that he will.

Newcastle United not expected to be busy in the January transfer window

Geordie Boot Boys have exclusively spoken to transfer expert Graeme Bailey, who has provided details on what he has heard from sources about Newcastle United’s current plans for the January transfer window.

“I don’t think Newcastle United will be doing too much in January, from what I am hearing,” he said.

“But that is not necessarily a negative thing. They got done a lot of business that they wanted to do in the summer, bringing in the likes of Malick Thiaw and the two forwards [Nick Woltemade and Yoane Wissa].

“They would have liked to have replaced Sean Longstaff properly, but are they going to do that in January? They can probably cope with what they have already got.

“I don’t see Newcastle doing an awful lot of business in January.”

The last major signing Newcastle United made in the January transfer window

Since the PIF takeover, Newcastle United have had varying January transfer windows.

The opening month of 2022 was wild for the Magpies, as it was the first opportunity for the new Newcastle United owners to splash the cash. They did just that, bringing in the likes of Bruno Guimaraes, Kieran Trippier and Dan Burn.

The following January, Newcastle United signed Anthony Gordon from Everton. He arrived for a fee of £45million, with the Magpies bringing forward one of their planned summer signings. They seized the opportunity to sign the Scouse winger, who had come close to joining Chelsea just a few months earlier.

Gordon remains the last major signing Newcastle United made in a January transfer window. They were not able to make any signings in 2024 because of PSR, while 2025 saw Newcastle opt against doing any incoming business to ensure they had more money to spend in the summer.

That proved to be the case, with the aforementioned six new signings costing around £250million.
